Post-war Siberia. Destiny leads steam engine driver Ignat, a war hero that made it all the way to Berlin, to a labour colony at the back of beyond (the colony goes by the name of "Krai", the Russian for "edge"). To drive his steam train and feel the force of the engine, the speed, freedom, danger; this is the stuff Ignat's life is made of. Through the icy winds and the snow-capped Taiga he sends his locomotive into the unknown where he is destined to meet his fate. In the Taiga a German girl by the name of Elsa hides herself from the world, struggling for survival and spending her nights in an earth shack. A film about man's battle for survival, love and the chance to be free. Fighting that takes place to a backdrop of the wonderful landscapes of the Siberian Taiga, the fast-flowing Northern river and the endless white sky. Who will be victorious, man or machine?
