The Uckermark – Germany’s largest rural district – a wonderful, sparsely populated landscape bordering with Poland. Portraying the region with his habitual painstaking composure, the director fuses the fate of the inhabitants with the course of time. He visits aristocrats who have returned to salvage a ruined castle, treasure hunters and adventurers, the winners and losers of the post-1989 era of change. Among those portrayed are superbly intractable individuals like Fritz Marquardt, the actor-director, as well as other locals, both long established and new to the Uckermark, but no less unmistakable and obstinate than the countryside which is their home.
