Foreign bodies in their rural Brandenburg community, Lars and his father Henrik are eyed suspiciously and mocked by the locals. Then the remnants of the family come together for a bizarre Christmas celebration, and Lars falls in love with Marie, who is deaf. He soon discovers just how eloquent saying nothing can be. With a superb cast and precise eye for the beauty of the countryside in winter, for the subtle shifts in the moods of these uprooted characters, the film describes a region where movement has set in beneath the ice.
