Emil has been left with an old Chaika from the time he served as chauffeur to a high-ranking officer. And with his wife. He found her hiding in an attic in 1958, and saved her from being arrested. They’ve grown old together, share a small flat in concrete tower block, and get on each other’s nerves. One day the debt collector rouses them from their daily stupor – their pensions aren’t enough to pay the rent or the bills. When night falls, Emil packs a bag and gets the old Russian limousine running again. The next morning, he robs a post office – his manners are, of course, impeccable. Two police detectives are soon on his trail. They’re a couple too, but have just fallen out with each other. Emil knows he’s passed the point of no return – and soon enough the detectives are sitting on his sofa back home. All the same, Emil phones his wife. He’s started to miss her. The meeting arranged between the old couple is the chance the police have been waiting for. They pounce, but Emil and his wife are clever enough to get away. The pair, a mature version of Bonnie and Clyde, now move from bank to bank, and when they need to be they’re faster than anybody would believe. Although the police are hot on their trail, Emil and his wife keep getting away. The couple’s escapades now dominate the evening news on television, and people take to the streets to demonstrate their sympathy with the wily senior citizens streets. But the detectives’ net is being drawn ever-closer. A spirited comedy with heartfelt warmth – and an usual take on the old clichés.
