The director uses the term “ambient film” to describe his atmospheric work that wordlessly guides the viewer into worlds that invite various interpretations. The individual episodes are harmoniously linked by the similar composition of their atmosphere and style, so that a sense of unity is produced. The red thread running through all the stories is mysticism, but in diverse facets from the mundane to the divine, from the psychological to the natural. The long shots showing people at a distance are characteristic of the film – as if somebody up in space is looking down at planet earth. The pictures feel powerful, huge, and cold, always as if intended for posterity. Human actions are observed without commentary, the emotional plane remains untouched. Every scene lasts only as long as it takes to send the imagination spinning, then a new episode begins, repeatedly allowing the director to demonstrate what the world really is: the planet we inhabit, one small part of the grand universe.

The music, likewise described as “ambient”, provides the film with a matching soundscape, and lets us hear what we’re seeing: timeless, vast expanses without cities, frontiers or political conflicts. A radically reduced filmic meditation with a peculiar charm of its own in precisely composed tableaux.
