The Moscow law student Nikolai Vornzov, who is of Georgian descent on his mother’s side, starts an internship in the city’s criminal investigation department. On his very first day, his colleagues are preoccupied with a mysterious killing: a wealthy businessman has been found shot in his apartment. Two more murders occur the very next day; the victims are again affluent men with links to organized crime. The deed bears the signature of one and the same marksman. And on the other side of the city, a man pretending to be blind stabs a Chechen. Nikolai can’t get the murders out of his head: in contrast to the police detectives, he is convinced they are all connected. He embarks upon his own investigations, and comes across clues that lead to Chechnya. As he gets to know people whose lives are scarred by war, he is forced increasingly to face up to a reality that society prefers to ignore. And suddenly his life, too, is brutally transformed... A moving anti-war film and suspenseful thriller harbouring a committed statement about a contemporary political theme.
