Winter 1967. The officer and Party hardliner Šebek is engaged in an argument with Czech nationalist Kraus, who was incarcerated during the Nazi occupation. Surrounded by bourgeois piano music and a Socialist Christmas ritual with “unbreakable” Polish egg-cups, Šebek and Kraus cross swords in the manner of Don Camillo and Peppone. Just when the love that has sprung up between their two children seems likely to reconcile the discordant neighbours, the roar of Soviet tanks strikes up outside their window.
As its healthy box-office performance showed, this comedy fuelled by the anecdotal power of everyday life struck a chord with viewers.
