In the aftermath of a tragic road accident Adam gives up his job at university and ceases to write. Instead he takes up part-time work at a supermarket, his only wish being to sleep and waste his life away. His personal tragedy is accompanied by one disaster after the next: Firstly flooding and then the Smolensk air crash, which saw the death of the Polish President, as well as numerous high-ranking members of the country's political and economic elite. Adam's only mental exercise is reading Divide Comedy; Slowly but surely Dante's visions make a positive contribution towards the protagonist's grieving process.
