A convent far from the city: assembled here are a number of vagabonds, every one of them with a history and personal tragedy of his own. They build a church and help on the grange, run by Mother Katerina together with eighteen-year-old Olya, whom she rescued from an orphanage. One day the businessman Pasha arrives at the monastic grange. He doesn't yet know it, but he's mortally ill. Only Olya senses the illness deep inside him. She takes pity and adores him with all of her naive child's soul. Pasha takes comfort from her affections and, with spring approaching, slowly returns to his old self...
