Operating in the political culture of the modern day Czech Republic, currently witness to growing rightwing populism, he encounters difficulties. Hamze Bytyci’s multifaceted documentary illustrates the double standards applied to questions of immigration and persecution, as well as the way in which history can be rewritten: During a commemoration service at the former Theresienstadt concentration camp rightwing conservatives accuse current refugees of being driven solely by economic motives, forcing an attendant rabbi to intervene and set the story straight: “It’s not only the Nazis who were to blame for the annihilation of the Jews and other minorities, but also those countries who refused to offer them protection”.
