Noise of the Universe

Michail Korolyov
Ukraine, 2017, 13 Min

A dynamic documentary film on up-and-coming bands in the east of the Ukraine: they play an aggressive form of rock and punk, prefer not to think of the war and find themselves in a constant state of rebellion against the establishment. Music gives meaning to life, though saying that the music-making process isn't always conflict-free.

"The chicks that ignore us will be begging for our autographs one day" claims one of the young members of the boisterous punk band. Do real punks actually rehearse, or are they only interested in getting drunk both on and offstage? The film, which could easily have been shot anywhere in the world, thus reflects on codes of behaviour, group dynamics, as well as freedom through solitude, occasional feuds within the group and provocative performances. A stylistic experiment with often blurred and alienating images framed by a video clip aesthetic and ear-splitting soundtrack that nevertheless leaves space for more intimate and reflective moments.
