This tragicomedy narrates the tale of young coachman Iskandar and his three wives. He provides refuge to a wounded Russian revolutionary, who in turn appoints him as an agitator for the new government following the victory of the revolution. Convinced as he is by socialist ideals, Iskandar takes up the cause of the Bolshevik regime with all his heart and soul: his popularity amongst the locals grows, much to his pleasure, and it's not until much later that he comes to appreciate the fundamental changes his private life has undergone as a result of the change of regime. Caught up in the contradictions of the revolution, the fervent agitator turns victim at risk of losing both his family and peace of conscience. SwS
