A simple request for a cigarette, in Russian, and an answer, in Belorussian, lead to a disagreement that turns violent. In Russian Sasha, a popular affectionate form of the names Alexander and Alexandra, is a popular name, as becomes clear when we are introduced to the many protagonists in the course of the film. Working with but a few static camera shots, director Andrey Kashpersky provides a snapshot of the prevailing social mood in Belarus, whilst leaving judgment thereof to the viewer. MM
