Strength of Materials

Andrejs Timofejevs
Belarus, 2017, 27 Min

All a hoax perhaps? A female voice explains the physical meaning of the concept of "strength of material" in largely academic terms. Next scene, we are introduced to four youngsters: Petya, Lyosha, Vika and Sveta. They reflect on relationships and what they perceive as an ideal partner, and yet something here isn't quite right.

Petya and Lyosha are women, Vika and Sveta men. Supposedly these interviews served as material for a film on young people. The viewer is intentionally thrown off guard: are the protagonists homosexual? If so, the candour and matter-of-fact tone with which they broach the issue is remarkable. The skillfully managed role reversal demands a heightened sense of attention from the audience, with reflection on the featured statements, certain of which are unexpected to say the least, unavoidable. The interviews for the most part genuine, this is mockumentary filmmaking at its best. MM
