Wartime: in Eastern Europe Slavic peoples find themselves fighting on opposing sides of the frontline, a remarkable situation. A Belarusian conscript soldier fighting for the Russians is roaming the countryside in search of food when he suddenly stumbles across an Austrian soldier.

Belarusfilm

The enemy turns out to be a Ukrainian fighting on the side of the Austro-Hungarians. The pair's shared Slavic roots allow them to find a common language, as bread, tobacco and vodka do the rounds. Is this sufficient for them to trust each other however?

Assisted by artful black and white imagery director Victor Asliuk narrates a heart-warming personal wartime story devoid of bloody battle scenes that reminds us of the fact that, though war has no winners, the importance of individual choice nevertheless remains. MM
