Relay Race

Belarus, 2016, 13 Min

An odyssey: a villager stumbles across a mysterious object whilst digging around in his garden. The neighbour he turns to for help believes they have treasure on their hands and claims half as his own. Soon however they come to realise that these supposed riches consist of nothing more than an old aircraft bomb. What are they now to do?

Mikhail Parkhomenka

A bomb is obviously a weapon and thus, according to Belarus law, needs to be handed over to the state. For this very reason the man loads it into his old Lada and heads to the nearest police station, in what turns out to be the beginning of a long journey.

This humorous production sees director Mikhail Parkhomenka narrate the difficulties involved in adhering to the multitude of contradictory rules and regulations of Belarusian law. In the process however the film progressively evolves into a bitter satire full of biting social criticism. MM
