Masha: Love Story of a girl ill with cancer

Iryna Arakhouskaya, Arciom Harbacevich
Belarus, 2015, 6 Min

Normality in the face of a cruel stroke of fate: Masha is an attractive young woman. She naturally had a lot of admirers, including her boyfriend, who promised her heaven and earth. One day however she falls seriously ill and is soon thereafter diagnosed with cancer. How is one to go on after such a diagnosis?

During an extended period in hospital she loses her right arm. Though her boyfriend has long left her, she now has Alexander, who loves her for what she is. Together with Masha's mother the trio enjoy a slow-paced existence in a small country house.

The documentary was shot in Vietka, located in an area which was highly effected by the nuclear fallout of the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. The directors Arakhouskaya and Harbacevich manage to pull off the delicate balancing act of shooting a film on one of the most serious illnesses of our time whilst giving the viewer a sense of these youngsters' hopeful, positive attitude and frame of mind.
