Lyubov i Partnyorstvo

Love & Partnership

Nikita Lavretski
Belarus, 2016, 67 Min

A Belarus video blog: Minsk-based Igor travels together with his girlfriend to his hometown of Vitebsk. Whilst walking around the city he constantly has his phone in selfie mode; after all, he can’t neglect the 50,000 subscribers of his YouTube blog.

There’s a lot of chitchat, as the couple remark on the city with a large dose of irony and sarcasm, at the same exposing the workings of their relationship to the scrutiny of the viewer. The initial impression is largely one devoid of emotion, with the pair seemingly taking pride in their indifference vis-à-vis the world around them and moments of silence drowned out with heavy metal music listened to via shared headphones. Nevertheless this expedition through an unknown city, as well as through these two youngsters’ hearts and minds, sees emotions come to the surface. Shot in a pseudo-documentary fashion, the second feature film from independent filmmaker Nikita Lavretski represents an impressive portrait of young people in modern Belarus. MM
