An intricately staged drama that contains both crime thriller and musical elements: Nikita studies in Minsk, plays in a band and has girlfriend Yana by his side. His father works as a policeman and would sooner see him at the local police academy. These considerations soon become secondary however when Nikita is confronted with some shocking news.

The young student is HIV positive. Yana's father, an opponent of the relationship from the start, senses an opportunity to be rid of his potential son-in-law. Thus Nikita finds himself up against not only a potentially deadly infection, but also an intolerant society full of prejudice.

Both enthralling and full of theatrical depth, the directors' perceptive camera work and unconventional choice of soundtrack combine to provide an in-depth portrait of youngsters willing to rebel and yet forced to find their place within a system plagued by contradictions.

VYSHE ZA NEBO, the first Belarusian independent feature film for the past 10 years, has just faced political censorship problems which makes official screenings in Belarus impossible. MM
