Spotlight Georgia at the upcoming FFC: ‘Georgian Film Is a Completely Unique Phenomenon.’

The upcoming FilmFestival Cottbus will present a selection of feature and short films from Georgia. On occasion of the country’s guest status at the Frankfurt book fair, we will highlight re-discoveries and brand new films like Giorgi Shengelaias book adaption ALAVERDOBA from 1962, Gio Mgeladze’s NO, PAL, an atmospheric arthouse thriller about the situation in the early 1990ies, and new films like Gigisha Abashidze’s NEIGHBOURS, a universal ensemble chamber play about the pros and cons of gentrification. Mgeladze will be part of the international festival jury, and more filmmakers from Georgia are also expected at the FilmFestival Cottbus.
For an overview on Georgian cinema, please note an article of Bernd Buder, director of the FilmFestival Cottbus, which was published in the current edition of the journal “Südosteuropa”: “‘Georgian Film Is a Completely Unique Phenomenon.’ A Film Scene with History, or Georgian Cinema in the Emancipation Loop”.

The FilmFestival Cottbus and “Südosteuropa” established a partnership this year. “Südosteuropa. Journal of Politics and Society is an English-language, multidisciplinary journal for the exploration of critical societal issues and processes related to Southeastern Europe after the systemic changes of 1989/90. It serves as a forum for current work in Southeast and East European Studies, including political Science, sociology, international relations, contemporary history, economics, anthropology, law studies, gender studies, cultural studies, and last but not least film studies. The journal's geographical scope is the area between the eastern Adriatic, the eastern Mediterranean, and the Black Sea. Comparative perspectives towards adjacent regions are welcome, as are analyses and theoretical issues with implications for other world areas.
