Moscow, Cannes and Karlovy Vary digital – FFC visits online film markets

Due to the Covid19 pandemic, all film festivals and film markets worldwide have been cancelled since the beginning of March. Most of them were postponed or presented their programmes online. With the necessary cautious reopening of the cinema landscape in Europe, it is foreseeable that film festivals will soon be able to take place again.

The Sarajevo Film Festival and the Prishtina Film Festival, for example, are confirming their presence in August, and the Venice Film Festival will also take place physically. At the same time, more and more networking events in the digital field are being offered.

On the part of the FFC, the curator of the "Russkiy Den" section, Marcel Maïga, is currently participating in the online film market for Russian films, the "Russian Virtual Content Market" at Roskino (June 8 to 15). He and FFC Programme Director Bernd Buder will also visit the digital "Marché du Film" at the Cannes Film Festival from June 22 to 26, THE annual industry meeting for professionals from all sectors of the global film industry, from producers to distributors, buyers, programmers, festivals, etc.

Accredited participants will have the opportunity to research current films, initiate new projects, enter into distribution and co-production negotiations and get information about current trends. Within a few months, formats were developed to translate film industry events into online presences.

This provides an opportunity to stay close to the production process and discover great films and projects for the FilmFestival Cottbus. "Digital network formats cannot replace physical events and demand a different level of attention and less emotionality from the participants. But you stay in touch worldwide", says FFC programme director Bernd Buder. "In the future, presence and online markets will complement each other to form a business liaison, just like streaming offers and conventional cinema operations. In any case, we are looking forward to the future online experiences and will report on them".
