ESCAPE ON THE ELBE

Uwe Rada, Holger Rada
Germany, 2011, 55 Min
Holger Rada & Uwe Rada

Ladislav Feierabend, having in 1941 fled from the Germans to London and become finance minister of Edvard Beneš’ government in exile, is after the communist coup in post-war Czechoslovakia faced with the prospect of a show trial. In Děčín he encounters the Elbe boatman Josef Novák, whose German-Czech family background has attracted the attentions of the Czechoslovak secret service. It is on Novák’s ship that Feierabend takes flight from his homeland anew.

A fateful encounter in 1948 is the starting point of a reflection on German-Czech local history; caught between normality, animosity and remembrance.
