The film begins with news footage on a failed military invasion of Cuba undertaken by a CIA sponsored group on April 17, 1961. Afterwards the camera switches to an orderly, clean hospital: a young man lies in bed, his injuries tended to by a German nurse. Carlos is alone and unable make himself understood, though Bärbel is curious to find out what happened to him. Despite the language barrier the two gradually draw closer: “Yo, Carlos! “Ich, Bärbel“.

CARLOS is the graduation film of Cuban director Humberto López y Guerra, who studied at the “Konrad Wolf” Film School in Babelsberg from 1963 to 1967. WMH
