Baglilik Hasan

Commitment Hasan

Semih Kaplanoğlu
Turkey, 2021, 147 Min

An existence lived under pressure: Hasan earns a living for himself and his family as a small-scale farmer. This almost idyllic routine is threatened by plans to build a power line across his fields. Hasan begins his very own fight against the impending changes, and is forced to come to terms with himself in the process.

Whilst Hasan takes on representatives of the electricity suppliers, he and his wife prepare a pilgrimage to Mecca. To this end he must make peace with all those whom he has wronged in the past. Made with a sure and steady hand and saturated with beautiful imagery, Semih Kaplanoğlu's latest film dissects the internal contradictions of its anti-hero: Hasan is one of those individuals who always believes himself to be right before being forced to acknowledge that the world is more complex than his stubborn nature would have him admit. A discursive film, full of insights gained from contemplative observation. A description of a landscape, the beauty of which is full of tension. And furthermore a mentality study that, in a manner characteristic of Kapanoğlu and akin to real life, shows how important all the nuances between good and bad are. All the while remaining in close proximity to its protagonists.
