SECRET WEAPON

Konstantin Statsky
Russia, 2019, 97 Min

The Second World War: when forced into a hasty retreat by advancing German troops the Soviet Army had to leave behind an example of its secret weapon, the famous Katyusha rocket launcher. Will an elite commando unit be able to bring back the important secret weapon?

The commander of the secret mission is recruited in prison: Yermakov is to be given a second chance. The secret commando is made up of a colourful mix, three women are there, all of them athletic and highly gifted. They are parachuted into enemy territory. Before they can even find the rocket launcher they are being hunted by the Wehrmacht. The Germans speed up the removal of the weapon. The Soviets do excellent work of sabotage and yet also get caught in the cross-hairs of roving gangs who plunder and kill the civilian population. In the midst of this war-time chaos two Jewish youths who have fled the besieged city of Leningrad are hiding. “Is this weapon really worth the price of the young lives that were sacrificed for it?” Yermakov is asked. At best there can only be a private happy ending for the suicide mission in this gripping war action film; the major, happy finale is to be found in the history books. WMH
