Jorge - Tod eines Vertragsarbeiters

Jorge - Tod eines Vertragsarbeiters

Monika Hielscher, Matthias Heeder
Germany, 1994, 84 Min

During a time when hardly anyone could imagine the xenophobic riots of the coming months and years, 28-year-old contract worker Jorge J. Gomondai, from Mozambique, was attacked by a group of rampaging skinheads in Dresden in March 1991 and pushed from a moving tram. Or did he jump out in a panic?

Gomondai died on April 6th ,1991 in a Dresden hospital. The subsequent legal proceeding against three of the perpetrators was unable to clarify the question of guilt. With the help of re-enactments of the interrogations, interviews with witnesses and a reconstruction of the night of the crime, Monika Hielscher and Matthias Heeder trace the events from constantly evolving perspectives against a background of the growing xenophobia in reunified Germany. Nationalist tones could be heard ever more frequently during this time of upheaval. Attacks against migrants and left-wing youths were on the increase whilst the police looked the other way and public prosecutors suspended investigations against neo-Nazis. For the foreign students and workers in the former GDR reunification meant above all uncertainty and fear, which is why many of them have meanwhile returned to their homelands. Jorge Gomondai's parents in Mozambique are still waiting for an explanation, years after his death. RB
