When the War Comes

, 2018, 78 Min

Jan Gebert's documentary gives cause for discussion: it shows how young nationalist Slovaks withdraw from the state and prepare with military and ideological drills for a worst case scenario that they themselves create.

Filmtalk: WHEN THE WAR COMES | English Q&A | FFC 2020

A tale of militant madness in the middle of Europe. The young Slovak Peter Švrček leads a paramilitary, nationalist group of young men. It was with this group that he led a riot against African refugees on the Hungarian border. Those who ask for protection there are the ones who will plunge the country into a war, according to the (false) beliefs of these physically-imposing guardians of the fatherland. The way they see things, those in power make a mistake in not taking the threat, one that is obvious to them, seriously. Švrček and his followers, on the other hand, intend to be ready for this very, or in fact any, conflict situation. At weekends the “Slovenskí Branci” militia meet conspiratorially in the forest. There the recruits replace their names with numbers and learn to use weapons in order to be able to defend both themselves and everything that is dear to them. These young Slovaks organise themselves outside of the rule of law and rebel against it. Director Jan Gebert takes the viewer into their world and lets us see the world through their eyes. DD
