IBORFIA

THE REFERENDUM

Alexa Bakony
Hungary, 2017, 21 Min

“Do you want the EU to be able to impose the compulsory settlement of non-Hungarian citizens in Hungary without the consent of the Hungarian Parliament?” All ten voters vote “No” in the smallest Hungarian village of Iborfia.

The propaganda machine against the admission of migrants is running on state television on 2 October, 2016, the day of the referendum. At the centre of the documentary is an old man who keeps repeating the phrases almost silently although he also has to admit that the abandoned community could really do with some new inhabitants. Using calm images, director Alexa Bakony delivers a subtle portrait of an abandoned village which votes completely in accordance with the party line. Although the opinions about the subject can be quite different. Such approval rates didn't even exist during communism. JT
