The vanished empire

Moscow in 1973-74: Sergei, Stepan and Kostya, three young students, divide their time between lectures on Marxism-Leninism, amorous adventures, rock concerts and the black market, where Rolling Stones records are bought and sold.

Shakhnazarovs "Imperium" tells the story of how it was to grow up the Soviet Union: an intimate, soberly narrated account of a breathless life between real socialism, pseudo-western lifestyles and lofty dreams of the future. In the end Sergei and Stepan meet again thirty years on and agree on one thing: "The Soviet Union is our home".
