Seventeen-year-old Raja isn't happy with her lot. Together with her brother she lives in a sleepy Latvian backwater. A stroke of fate sees this rebellious teenager undergo a transformation however, as she moults into a responsible young woman, even if she resorts to highly unconventional methods in the process.

Raja's mother has abandoned her for England, her grandmother isn't in the best of health and she can't take her eyes off her younger brother for a second. Initially willing to take on every challenge headfirst, an approach which even puts her in police custody, she is forced into a change of tact by the death of her grandmother: she is now to prevent both herself and her brother from being sent to an orphanage at all costs. Over night she blossoms into a responsible and highly imaginative young woman, falls in love and follows her dreams.

This beautifully framed coming-of-age drama from director Renārs Vimba is both gritty and insightful, drawing inspiration from New British Cinema. It stands out not only due to its wonderfully lit and composed imagery, but also thanks to a wonderful performance from Elīna Vaska in the role of Raja. JT
