Romania, 2013, 105 Min

A stirring account on life during the Ceaușescu era, inclusive of the all-encompassing fear of ending up in trouble, having career progress blocked or even landing in prison for nothing more than ill-conceived words or actions.

Shot in black and white, Andrei Gruzsniczki's second feature-length film is set in the year 1984. Promising mathematician Sorin publishes the results of his latest research in the journal of an American university without official permission, as a result of which he becomes the target of an investigation by the Securitate despite his party member status. Matters are in fact further complicated by the fact that a friend of his, likewise a mathematician, defected to France the year before, with the latter's wife waiting anxiously for permission to join her husband in exile. The secret police agent assigned the case is determined to find out how the papers ended up in the US, with a promotion on offer should a successful outcome prevail. With career advancement at stake, all means are considered just. EG
