One out of every three women. Behind Closed doors.

Belarus, 2016, 12 Min

A harrowing production: indistinct, rustling sounds and faces in semi-darkness. Various photos, in differing constellations, are displayed on the screen. Women report on the lives they live, and yet they would prefer to remain anonymous. The stories they tell are deeply moving …

Olga Gorbunova works as director of “Radislava”, a Minsk-based non-governmental organization that offers assistance to victims of domestic violence. They are, in fact, the only point of contact for those in need, with the state largely ignoring the issue. Drawing on experimental means director Alexander Vasukovich produces a documentary film on widespread violence against women in Belarus, the extent of which is alluded to in the film’s title. This film project provoked a long overdue public debate, thanks in no small part to the bravery of the women involved and their willingness to go public despite the risk of stigmatization. MM
